Boys wear pink to protest bullying

Posted by Daddy Rhon on September 15th, 2007

boys in pink

When 12th grader David Shepherd and Travis Price saw another student bullied for wearing a pink shirt, they decided that enough is enough and got a bunch of students to come to school wearing pink!

The Grade 9 student in Novia Scotia arrived for the first day of school last Wednesday and was set upon by a group of six to 10 older students who mocked him, called him a homosexual for wearing pink and threatened to beat him up.

The next day, seniors David Shepherd and Travis Price decided something had to be done about bullying. “It’s my last year. I’ve stood around too long and I wanted to do something,” said David.

They used the Internet to encourage people to wear pink and bought 75 pink tank tops for male students to wear. They handed out the shirts in the lobby before class last Friday — even the bullied student had one.

They also brought a pink basketball to school as well as pink material for headbands and arm bands. David and Travis figure about half the school’s 830 students wore pink.

“The bullies got angry,” said Travis. “One guy was throwing chairs (in the cafeteria). We’re glad we got the response we wanted.”

David said one of the bullies angrily asked him whether he knew pink on a male was a symbol of homosexuality. He told the bully that didn’t matter to him and shouldn’t to anyone.

Starbuck$ Ate My Allowance

Consumer Whore

What’s your particular addiction at Starbucks? Do you wish you could just point and grunt because your drink order sounds so fricken gay spoken outloud?

triple grande sugar-free cinnamon hazelnut half-fat two-splenda cappucinio

I know it is ridiculous to pay nearly five bucks for a cuppa mediocore joe at a pretentious fast-food joint where “tall” means “small”. My heart truly is heavy for the spoken word artists who are being forced out into the elements because The Corporation has no soul. But really… who needs beatnik ambiance in the A.M.? A fat Daddy rolls up for the mofuken CAFFEINE. I am *addicted*, gotdammit, and chemical jonesin’ craves consistency.

Anyways, if you have no idea who you are, you can enter your usual Starbucks drink order into this widget and the Starbucks Oracle will decipher your complex personality for you. Behold, the Oracle said that I am high maintenance and my friends find me intolerable. That brightened my day. :)

Laura Lipton’s macabre art

Laura Lipton creates very realistic pencil drawings which cleverly twist the horror of death with a bit of surrealist humor. She kinda swipes “day of the dead” imagery without the bright colors and mirth. Ghastly, but there is very wry wink after the “boo!”.

I read an interview where the artist said: “My parents were very proud of my work. They thought I was a child prodigy, a genius. They used to show my artwork at family gatherings. I’ll never forget the faces of my aunts & uncles when they looked from me to my drawings! The look of confusion and suspicion…. I was a cherubic child and my imagery was brutal and bloody.”
